10 tips for exploring Porto Seguro, Bahia Brazil

PortoSeguro, Estrada da Balsa, Arraial d’Ajuda & Trancoso

Porto Seguro was the first landfall in Brazil of Portuguese explorer Pedro Cabral and the town dates back to 1500, although what is left of the historical part does little justice to such a momentous event.

40 miles to the south of Porto Seguro covers an area populated by small towns, each one a unique destination worth exploring, with plenty to see and wonderful places to stay to suit varied styles of vacation. The most beautiful of these are
Estrada da Balsa,
(less a destination per se; more a stretch of road running parallel to the beach with small pousadas on both sides),
Arraial d’Ajuda and
Trancoso.

Getting accurate distances for these wonderfully off the beaten track destinations,
either from Google maps itself (it hasn’t mapped the area properly yet) or from reviews of the area, can be difficult. You may read that Arraial is only 3kms from Porto Seguro, when it is more like 10kms, and Trancoso 10 kms from Arraial, which is actually 21kms. However, the most important thing is the time it takes to get there. A
short ferry ride over the River Burnhaem from Porto Seguro, takes you to the Estrada da Balsa (or Ferry road) i
n half an hour. This
runs south to Arraial d’Ajuda and takes
less than an hour
and joinsthe road leading to Trancoso, which takes another
40 minutes.

But make sure you leave your angst behind,
as the roads are full of interminable bumpswhich slow everything down.

I have been to this area of Brazil 3 times now and every time it has been beautifully hot and sunny with a gentle breeze, perfect for appreciating nature, the sea, the nightlife and the tranquillity. This latest trip in October coincided with the week that the Blackberry didn’t either Black or berry. But for once I was relieved.
So where should you visit and where should you stay?

1. Deserted beaches

Estrada da Balsa, Arraial d' Ajuda and Trancoso all have
deserted
beaches near them with the exception of Porto Seguro, which is now almost totally built up in the stretch in and around the town.However, the longest deserted stretch is most definitely that which runsparallel to the Estrada da Balsa. Check out the lovelyPousada Areia Branca and Casa da Arvore if you are on a budget or prefer selfcatering; if you want to be trulype na areia- or right on the beach- the best option is undoubtedly the beautiful Pousada Beijamar.

2. Beaches with beachbars

The Beijamar has its own beach bar which is great but if youwant more local action and some spectacular fried fish then check out thewonders of the Bar do Jonas in Trancoso and stay at Pousada Calypso , wherethey don’t have a pool specifically because they think you should enjoy thebeach!

3. History

If you want history you can find most in the city of Porto Seguro and the village ofTrancoso where the 16^th century cottages round the main quadradosquare have all been done up and repainted (and turned into bijou boutiqueshops!) although it has to be said there is not an awful lot to see in either.The majority of Porto Seguro accommodation is large hotel style so if that’snot your style you can easily stayat a pousada on the Estrada da Balsa and just get the ferry across for the day.In Trancoso there are some amazing pousadas close by the quadrado e.g. Pousada Capim Santo and Pousada Mata N’Ativa.

4. Nightlife

If you want student style nightlife then head for PortoSeguro or Arraial d’Ajuda ; if you prefer more “grown-up” style then Trancosois more upmarket and has better restaurants. If you like the nightlife butprefer to walk back to tranquillity, then check out the Casarao Alto Mucuge inAjuda with its beautiful design and unique style.

5. Shopping

Both Ajuda and Trancoso have great shopping as well as nightlife with places which open late pm and stay openfrequently till the early hours. There are also table stalls in the streets of Trancoso justto tempt you. On my last trip I bought some colourful keyrings and a hammock inAjuda and some jewelled havaianas and earrings made of seed pods from astall in Trancoso. The latter costme all of R$5.00 for the pair (less than US$3 in what is a VERYexpensive country these days) and have been envied more than anything else Ihave ever bought including by a woman at US customs (that must be a first!)

6.Tranquility

Here the Estrada da Balsa definitely wins all round as it isreally just a strip of beach with the nearest town (Arraial d’Ajuda) a fewmiles away. Any of the pousadashere will be fine and it is easy to get a shared van or taxi into Ajuda whenever you want to go. The pousadas in Trancoso and Ajuda arequiet in themselves but all suffernoise pollution particularlyduring high season and holidaysand the noise carries. I personally love both places but always take earplugsjust in case.

7. Ocean Views

You can get beautiful sea views from the Beijamar (Estradada Balsa) and from one or two of the apartments at the Capim Santo in Trancosobut for the best ocean views ever then try the Casarao Alto Mucuge in Ajudawhere the view of palm trees beachand turquoise seas is out of this world.

8. Artesanato / handicrafts

Most of the pousadas in this region are decorated with localhandicrafts, paintings and wickerwork, but the place that” lives” handicraftsis without doubt the Pousada Calypso in Trancoso. There are pieces here whichthey have been collecting over the last 20 years and the owners know all the artisans- beautiful objets d’art which you won’t findanywhere else in the world.

9. Eco-friendly pousadas

Nearly all the pousadas in the special collection of highlyrecommended pousadas are eco-friendly, but Pousada Mata N’Ativa definitely takesit one step further in attempting to be carbon neutral as well. Definitelyworth checking out this placefor the peace and tranquillity you find there aswell as the variety of flowers trees and tropical plants in the gardens.

10. Dining

Last but not least. Where to eat? Forget the Estrada daBalsa as there is nothing there. However you are spoiled for choiceelsewhere. In Ajuda there is a great restaurant called “Aipim” which I will definitely be returning toand in Trancoso there is one ofthe best restaurants in the world, right inside the Pousada Capim Santo.

The Estrela da Ilha (Star of the Island) is quite simply an extraordinary place, whether you come for the pousada which opens during high season and holidays, or the spa and yoga retreat which operates here the rest of the time.A beautiful high ceilinged oceanfront wooden lodge nestling up against the Atlantic rainforest this is a place which is only accessible by boat and where you are surrounded by nature on all sides.

There are 9 suites here, 3 standard, 4 luxury and 2 superluxury and all are well appointed with large beds, powershowers, hammocks and verandas, but there is no roomsafe, fridge or TV. The luxury here lies in the superb location, the large outdoor heated jacuzzi, the sauna, the healthy food, the views, the tranquillity, the gentle Brazilian music playing in the background.and the informal but excellent service.

Whichever plan you come on, be it the more normal half board pousada experience or the all inclusive Island Experience and yoga retreat you will go to sleep and wake to the sound of the waves enveloped by a glorious feeling of peace and tranquility. An unforgettable experience!

10 practical tips for travelling to Brazil from Europe and US

1. Timings
If you are visiting major cities like Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Sao Paulo and want to do some travelling around to visit local islands, historic towns and national parks, allow yourself at least 10 days to do so, with two days either side in the city. Additionally if you want to combine a visit to any of these cities with a trips to the the Amazon and/or Pantanal allocate at least three weeks to accommodate all of the travelling time involved.

2. Accommodation

There are varied choices of accommodation, which include chain hotels, aparthotels (which usually have separate living room and kitchenette) hostels with dorms, or pousadas (much more beautiful B&Bs, inns and boutique hotels). The good accommodation gets booked up quickly so it is advisable to make bookings in advance, and explore some of the pousadas slightly away from the main tourist areas. Pousadas usually have a restriction of a minimum of a two nights stay, so bear this in mind.

3. Price hikes during holidays/high season

Check when Brazil's national holidays fall and make sure you avoid them if you are not coming specifically for them! During major holidays like New Year and Carnival prices can rise up to 5 times.

4. Budget travel

On a similar note, if you are on a budget or travelling solo then come to Brazil off season -generally between March and June and between September and November, prices are a lot more affordable for both flights and accommodation.

5. Weather

Check rainfall in the places you are going. In the south of Brazil the climate is more like southern Europe so rain is more spread out throughout the year. However in the Amazon and Pantanal there is a specific rainy season (usually between December and May) and in the northeast many pousadas actually close in June when it is rainiest.

6. Internal travel

Intercity buses in Brazil are generally very comfortable but distances are huge and often it works out cheaper to take a plane. Do a comparison check on www.decolar.com and then go direct to the airline to buy your ticket. Lesser known airlines like Webjet, Trip and Azul are fine as well as TAM and GOL, but you may find they don't take foreign credit cards. There are no trains in Brazil except for commuter trains and some trains specifically for tourists in Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso and Parana.

7. Money exchange

Change at least some money before you come as the exchange rate is usually better outside Brazil. Once in Brazil it is easiest to take money out from ATMs at Banco Bradesco or HSBC . Exchange house and cambios are getting very few and far between although in working hours you can still change money in some banks. If you bring cash with you then US$ and Euros are easier to change than GBP; however you can only pay for things by credit card or in Reais.

8. ATMs

Most reasonable restaurants/clubs take Visa and Mastercard, but many pousadas still only accept cash and off the beaten track ATMs are few and far between if they exist at all (there are none for example on Ilha Grande). Also there is often a daily limit of R$600,00 per card (US$400,00) so it is useful to have a couple of cards to play with.

9. Credit cards

Make sure you bring your pin (!) and tell your credit card company that you are travelling to Brazil in advance otherwise they may well cancel it!

10. Airport transfers

When you make your booking make sure you have a fixed rate transfer organised with your pousada or hotel (which you may have to pay to the driver in cash) Otherwise plan to take an airport taxi to your accommodation on arrival which you can pay for by credit card.

What an amazing place- the pousada Capim Santo. I had been hearing good things about this pousada for some time from friends but the reality exceeded all expectation. The aim of owners Sandra and Nando is to offer comfort of the highest quality in the relaxed informality of a home from home, with superb cuisine as an additional extra. Guests obviously approve as there is a huge repeat business.

Capim Santo is one of the most traditional pousadas in Trancoso and it has grown substantially since its beginning some 25 years ago and also added a beautiful pool ,massage suite and beautifully kept tropical gardens. There is choice of different standards of suite together with individual bungalows and all have excellent bed linen, flat screen TVs, telephone, safe and fridge and are decorated in clean white style which gives an immediate sense of peace.

However, it is the superb restaurant and the service, detail and staff commitment which really set the Capim Santo apart: the welcome you get from the staff when you arrive, the eco-friendly beauty products, the information booklet in English and Portuguese, not to mention the amazing cuisine. I stayed a night and felt immediately like cancelling the rest of my trip and just chilling there. I will be back!

Trancoso is a place where you can get as much action as you want- from snorkelling, golf, tennis, mountain biking, horseriding, surfing and kitesurfing to capoeira and forró dance lessons. The nightlife also offers choice with restaurants vying with bars and all night dancing places. But Trancoso also has its gentle side. It is a super friendly place where people talk to you in the streets and the pace of life is much slower than a normal beach resort. For me one of the best things to do is just to go with the flow, sleep in (with earplugs!) and chill out, soaking in the beauty of an extraordinary place as yet unspoilt by mass tourism.

What an extraordinary privilege to wake up in the Casarão Alto Mucugê- to the early morning sun streaming through the windows, to the sound of the waves breaking on the beach below, and to the uninterrupted view of the sea stretching out in front of you. But then the Casarão (or Big House) is extraordinary in many ways. Designed by world renowned architect Luciano Soares this is a place where rustic meets chic, where Portobello road kitsch meets handmade Indian fabrics and Indonesian and Brazilian handicrafts, all the evidence of owner Eloisa's world travels and eclectic taste.

Perched on top of the cliffs of Alto Mucugê, it is only a few minutes walk to the beautiful deserted beach of Pitinga in one direction and the town centre of Arraial d'Ajuda in the other. There are just 8 apartments here divided between the main house and a separate building just across the grass where many suites have varandas and sea views. In between the two and strategically situated is a heated ofuro perfect for lounging on long evenings just looking out to sea.

I came in low season when everything is quieter, the beaches deserted and the best restaurants more relaxed. But for anyone who just wants to chill the pousada is the place to be. A little piece of paradise and another wonderful addition to the Hidden "special collection".

Arraial d’Ajuda was just a sleepy Indian fishing village called Santo Amaro when it was discovered by the Portuguese in the early 1500s. And it probably would have stayed that way had it not been for the discovery of a certain statue and rumours of miracles, which encouraged visitors from far and wide.

These days Ajuda has become a mecca of a different sort - for predominantly college students spreading out from nearby Porto Seguro, attracted by the beaches, bars, boutiques and clubbing. In high season the place buzzes with crowds of young people hanging out and loud music playing in the main street, Rua do Mucugê, and on the beach.

Pousada Calypso - "Beautiful leafy pousada just off the quadrado offering exceptional value"

The golden light streams through the windows of my high-ceilinged whitewashed suite at the Pousada Calypso and once again I smile, knowing I have found another hidden gem: a beautiful Portuguese/Brazilian owned place with great accommodation, set in lush tropical gardens, only minutes from all the action of the famous Quadrado square.

There are 10 suites here, including lofts, bungalows and more standard rooms and all are well maintained with airconditioning, fans, flatscreen TVs and excellent bathrooms. There is also a great sitting/breakfast area full of local art and handicrafts. "No pool though?" "On purpose" replies owner Mari. "We are really close to some of the best beaches in Brazil and that's the place to be". For those who have to be near water there is a lovely gazebo with whirlpool surrounded by tropical plants and birds in the centre of the pousada but I for one would take Mari's advice and take the short stroll down to the sand.

Trancoso lies forty five minutes drive to the south of Arraial d'Ajuda and an hour from the balsa or ferry which brings you over from Porto Seguro. Originally an Indian fishing community, it was founded by the jesuits priests in 1583. The famous church of St John the Baptist of the Indians was built on the site of the orginal 16^thconstruction, at the top of a cliff overlooking a never ending turquoise sea. From here it is just a short walk down to the beaches and beach bars of Nativos, Trancoso and Coqueiros.

The choppers started coming over Leblon thick and fast at6am on Sunday 13th November 2011, heralding, as we thought then, the start ofthe battle to retake the nearby favela of Rocinha. As it turned out thesignificance was something much greater: not only Rocinha but also the neighbouring favelas of Vidigal and Chacará do Ceu werealready back under government control, ina 2 hour operation involving tanks, armoured vehicles and 3000 troops during which not a single shot was fired.

To understand the importance of this operation aimed at“pacifying” the areas concerned and implanting the latest UPPs or policepacification units, it is important to look at the strategic importance of thefavelas concerned. Rocinha and Vidigalare vertical shanty towns which have developed on either side of the mountainsof Dois Irmãos, an area of difficultaccess which divides the super upmarket neighbourhoods of Leblon and Gávea fromsimilarly sought after areas of São Conrado and Barra. Originally a farmingarea which provided fruit and vegetables for the lower lying areas of Rio inthe early part of the 20th century, people starting settling there inthe 1950s whenLeblon and Gavea started to grow and then at an ever increasing speed from the 70s on with the huge influx ofmigrants from the northeast. Now citiesin their own right these ramshackle communities have a combined population ofover 120,000 living mainly in simple brick built houses linked by a complicated series of alleyways andstairways. Most houses haveTVs and fridges but often lack basic facilities likesanitation and rubbish collection. The exception to this of course is thehouses owned by the drug barons and hitherto rulers of the favelas, many ofwhich have fixtures and fittings such as swimming pools, jacuzzis and barswhich would not be out of place in the houses of the nouveau riche below.

The fact that all these favelas have developed in such achaotic way and have been effectively ruled by druglords charging protectionfees and imposing total allegiance on the local population for the last 4decades, has much to do with the tacit and not so tacit support of municipal authorities in Rio, who from the time of governor Brizola inthe early 80s have actively preferredto leave the existing system alone inthe interest of votes rather than get involved. During the same period therehas also been a corresponding proliferation of corrupt cops ever more eagerto accept bribes from those in control and an army of lawyers contracted by theruling faction happy to play the system in return for liberal payouts .

The occupation of Rocinha and Vidigal right now is astrategic move by municipal authorities towards controlling localcommunities in the run up to the World Cup in 2014 and theOlympics 2016. In the beginning itseemed a little senseless to announce the operation 36 hours in advance thereby giving druglords ample time toescape, but this turned out to be a meticulously planned and executed operation. Some traffickers did escape but many of the key figures such as Peixe (Fish)anddrug supremo Nem were caught in blitzes and the early announcement ensured thatthere was no resistance when the armoured vehicles went in. Nobody is under any illusion that the next few months will be easy. House to house searches arealready taking place for arms and munition, stolen motorbikes and drugs. However the rest will take much more time-the implantation of basic sanitation, utilities, refuse collection, schools andhealthcare. What is certain is that aparallel universe, in existence for decades, has ceased to be, a fact whichgives no small sense of relief to those who live nearby and is definitely causefor celebration for those living in the favela communities themselves.

Pousada Paraiso Verde, Ilheus (Barra do Sargi), Bahia : This is an extraordinary place where the New York pop art of Kenny Scharf meets the rivers and deserted beaches of the Barra do Sargi, midway between Ilheus and Itacaré in Bahia. There are only 4 suites here but all are beautifully appointed and set in stilted bungalows with views to the sea through the coconut palms. A tropical paradise!

ArtJungle Eco-lodge & Spa, Itacaré, Bahia: This is another extraordinary place where you choose between stilt houses, tree houses and a suite with no walls overlooking the Rio das Contas river. Beautiful rustic romantic chic accommodation in an exceptional setting- a fabulous park full of original art and sculptures, with a pool, sauna, massage and yoga all on offer

Amazon Tupana Lodge, Manaus, Amazonas: You only have to look at the google map on the pousada page to see quite how far this place is off the beaten track- and you definitely can't get there on your own! A rustic jungle lodge surrounded by rainforest and rivers and wild animals. Comfortable rooms with great food, but electricity by generator only a few hours a day, and definitely no wi-fi. A true Amazon experience only a few hours away from manaus, but feels like a million miles from nowhere.

Hotel Fazenda Baia das Pedras, South Pantanal, Mato Grosso do Sul : This is another place you definitely wouldn't find on your own. A beautiful eco-lodge surrounded by 15000 hectares of land and an exuberance of nature. It will take you 6 hours by 4x4 to get here on a good day, majority on dirt roads where the only traffic is animals- tapirs, raccoons, capybara, deer, anteaters. Once you arrive, you will also see a variety of birds, including the bright blue hyacinth macaw the likes of which you are unlikely to have ever seen before. Wonderful!

Pousada Mangueira,Morerê, Boipeba, Bahia: Boipeba is already becoming known as one of the most beautiful tropical islands in Brazil. However, it has manged to avoid the onslaught of mass tourism due to the fact that the only traffic and indeed transport on the island is by hardy tractor. (At last count there were 14, of which 12 were out of order!) And you will definitely need a tractor to take you from Boipeba village, where the boats come in, across the island to Morerê and the British run Pousada Mangueira. Set in leafy gardens surrounding the mango trees this is a tiny pousada in a tiny village lost in time. A place where you are not only just moments from the beach and its bars, but also only minutes from restaurants which serve the best freshly caught lobster,shrimp and seafood. I myself have been twice now and will be back again early next year. It may be a trek to get there but like all the pousadas here on this list it is definitely worth it.

Bonito has won Brazil’s “eco destination of the year” 9 years running now and yet it is still relatively unknown to the foreigners who flock to the nearby Pantanal. Here the landscape is completely different- rolling hills, waterfalls, and caves rather than the flat wetlands and open spaces of the Pantanal. However you can still see a a great deal of wildlife here and for those who like snorkelling, floating, rapelling, rafting and diving as well, this is a perfect place to find it all.

The 10 things I liked the best:

1. The Lagoa Misteriosa- at least 220 metres deep and they are still counting!

2. Floating and snorkelling down the Rio da Prata

3. The buffet feast at lunchtime at the Fazenda Agua Viva (shared with resident hyacinth macaw and friendly toucan)

4. The crystal clear blue of the Lago Azul

5. The waterfalls and fish in the Rio do Peixe

6. The wonderful picanha steak in the Tapera restaurant

7. Honey from Maria’s farm (owner of Pousada Galeria Artes)

8. All the wonderful crafts at the Casa do João

"Beautiful 1930s townhouse in Santa Teresa with Sugar Loaf views"
Guesthouse Bianca came highly recommended by Alcino of Alcino Estalagem one of our favourite pousadas in Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, so I was anxious to see the place, chat to owner, Guido, and sample one of his wonderful cachaças. (It turns out there is no Bianca after all- it is just the name of the house, but the wonderful cachaça did indeed turn out to be wonderful!)

This is simply a beautiful place, a lovingly refurbished, stained glassed, 1930s townhouse in the heart of Santa Teresa, with a beautiful Moorish style terrace and portuguese style tiles. There are only 3 guest suites all comfortable and individually designed but the best one (for me at least) is definitely the Sugar Loaf suite with its fabulous views. The idea here is for guests to be able to chill out in comfort and peace in the pousada but also to be part of the local community, so although breakfast is included in the price it is actually taken in a local bar.

The whole feel of Santa Teresa is that of a bohemian artistic community and at Guesthouse Bianca you'll only be a stone's throw from some of the best restaurants and bars where spontaneous music mixes with local art exhibitions. Want something different? Then just take nearby transport down into Zona Sul for some beach or check out Lapa and the centre of Rio for some dancing. Altogether you couldn't find a better place to stay in a wonderful location.

Pousada Maris is situated right next door to Pousada Vivenda and was built by the same architects, so boasts the same beautiful high ceilinged spacious whitewashed bungalows, but decorated in owner Stela's impeccable style.

The pousada hosts a maximum of 4 people so things are as intimate or busy as you want them to be. Have breakfast in your suite, or on the veranda or with the guests in the other bungalow, whichever you prefer. Check out the local restaurants or fix a light meal for yourselves and chill out "at home" with one of the 300 DVDs on offer. Everything here has clearly been thought through with the individual guest's needs in mind. From the high thread white linen sheets to the coffee making facilities and small oven, the fabulous bathroom, the information on where to go and what to do, and not least the adaptor you will need for your foreign appliance to work with the new uniquely Brazilian 3 pin plugs!

I arrived in light rain, super stressed out to a wonderful welcome by Stela who showed me around and immediately booked me a massage at the fabulous Shambhala spa round the corner. After that we ambled round the corner to the Cafe do Canal which serves great pizzas and bruschetta, then back to the pousada for a few cool beers by the floodlit pool. Chilling out at Maris in good company was just fine for the foreseeable future!

Review: Casa Cool Beans, Rio de Janeiro (Santa Teresa)

Casa Cool Beans opened in December 2010 and in less than 6 months rocketed up to the top of Trip Advisor so I was anxious to see what was so good about the place! It wasn't difficult. Starting from the warm reception at the front gate you get the feeling that this is a place you want to be, where you are amongst like minded people in the heart of a city, but still have the peace and quiet and friendliness which comes with being in a small community.

There are seven suites at Cool Beans at present (with 2 more planned for the New Year) and each one has been beautifully refurbished with decoration by local artists and artisans under the watchful eye of American owners Lance and David and the ever accompanying dog, Mousse. Walk up the steps and you are surprised by a large terrace with communal breakfast area and bar and great plunge pool for those hot sultry days.

However the real difference of this place comes in the detail. Even before you arrive at Cool Beans you get an email telling you what will be on in Rio during your trip and when you get to the pousada you will find a whole host of other suggestions as well. Nothing appears to be too much trouble to arrange, although you might just find that the best option is sometimes what we did- forget it all and chill by the pool with a book and a super cool glass of local champagne.

Ongoing construction work has been taking place at the wonderful Pousada Aratinga Inn in Ilha Grande, Rio de Janeiro, ready for its reopening at the end of the month. Owner Rennie Jackson has been working flat out on a refurbishment project, to create new and eco-conscious chalets and re-landscape the surrounding gardens.
The chalets will include new furniture (beds, bedside cabinets) made from recycled demolition timbers (certified by IBAMA), as are the chalets themselves. Air conditioners-10,000 BTUs for efficient and (less energy wasting) and even new environmentally friendly toilet systems with "Eco Flush".

Beautiful flowers are coming up in the garden thanks to a surprisingly mild winter, and the names of the chalets will be reflective of the flowers in the garden.

1. Itacare is a very unique place because it is one of the very few locations where the atlantic rainforest meets the ocean....you feel like you are both in the rainforest and on the beach, the best of both worlds.

2. There is plenty to do for any type of traveller - whale watching (July to November), rafting, zip lining, boat trips up the river, relaxing at one of the many waterfalls, visiting nature reserves, hiking and snorkeling. You need at least 10 days to get a really good feel of the place and make you want to come back for more.

3. Being on the cacau coast there are obviously plenty of cocoa plantations. you can visit some of them and watch the process of how you get from the cacau fruit to delicious pure chocolate. If you have no time to visit a fazenda you can taste the homemade chocolate at Marly's "Cafe com Cacau".

4. Walk the 50min stunning trail to prainha - considered one of Brazil's most beautiful beaches - and on the way refresh at the waterfall and take pictures of the wonderful views.

5. Learn how to surf, a must since itacare is one of the best surf spots in Brazil. there are surf beaches for all levels and they say that if you can surf at tiririca you can surf anywhere in the world!

6. If you don't feel like eating the staple which is meat, rice and beans have dinner at Alamain, a Lebanese restaurant, that serves delicious vegetarian plates, or indulge in a moqueca (fish stew and typical bahian dish) offered at most restaurants.

7. In the evening stroll down Pituba street, the main hangout where you find most of the restaurants, bars and shops, have a sorvete, enjoy a caipifruta at one of the many bars and listen to live music, mainly Reggae and Forro.

8. Get away from the hype and mingle in more with the locals, walk to the end of the Orla, have a thin crispy pizza at "pizza turco" while drinking a Skoll from the cheapest bar in town. If you feel like something sweet walk into "Cafe e Boteco Vila" next door, a bar restaurant owned by a New Yorker, who makes brownies to die for.

9. Even if you don't feel like partaking in any of the above you can stay in and read and relax in your hammock on your veranda overlooking the ocean, taking in the soothing sound of the waves, observing the humming birds, butterflies and other creatures, or just letting your mind wander.

1. Walks along the beautiful beach of Abraao. Whichever way you look, the views are just breathtaking. While away a few hours at the Cafe do mar, a relaxing, but lively beach bar. Try a passionfruit caipifruta ......mmmmm delicious! This is a great place to meet fellow travelers from all over the world.

2. Follow the jungle trail to the s-p-e-c-t-a-c-u-l-a-r Lopes Mendes surf beach, recognised as one of the 10 best beaches in Brazil!

3. Catch the waves and then stroll along 3 kilometres of pristine silver sand before catching a schooner back to the village of Abraao.

4. Take a full day boat trip to Green Lagoon, with several other stops along the way. Swim and snorkel with colourful fish and turtles. Soak up the sun on the bow of the boat and enjoy a superb seafood lunch at a tropical beach hideaway.

5. Hike to Dois Rios (Two Rivers) and visit the ruins of the Candido Mendes prison, which only closed in 1994! The surf beach is well worth the walk and you must have lunch at the "barzinho" (the little bar). Howling monkeys will accompany you along the way home. This is a great day for photography.

6. Enjoy a romantic dinner at one of the many restaurants in the village of Abraao, offering excellent local seafood. Dom Mario's is one of my favourites and I just love Dom's char-grilled fillet of salmon with passionfruit sauce!

7. Take the Abraao circuit walk. This is an easy 1-2 hour tail in the direction of Black Beach. You will visit the ruins of Lazareto, the original quarantine station and first prison on Ilha Grande. from there the tropical forest trail takes you to the freshwater lagoon and cascades. A really refreshing dip in the natural pool is a great way to cool off at the end of your walk.

8. Mix in with the locals and learn to dance Forro at the local nightspot "Ipuam Guacu" (Big Island in the language of the Tamoios indians). This is a guaranteed great night of fun with authentic Brazilian music.

9. Get that old bod back in shape! Kayak from Abraao beach to Abraaozinha (Little Abraao). This is a 30 - 40 minute paddle and the destination is definitely worth it. Have lunch at Point de Verao (my favourite) and try the excellent calamari or the super fresh "isca de peixe", succulent fillets of white fish,
lightly fried and served with fresh lime. You have definitely earned an icy cold "Skol" before the paddle home!

Cristalino Jungle Lodge is an extraordinary unique place. We arrived in thick cloud which rapidly changed to rain (and immediately back to hot sun!), but even then it was clear that this is a lodge which is leaps and bounds ahead of the competition. The amazing setting goes without saying, an 18 room lodge set in the middle of the jungle on the banks of the heavily forested black Cristalino River. However it is the details which catch your attention- the welcome drink on arrival where the staff and personal guides are introduced and the rules of the jungle explained (no going off on your own!), the quality of the accommodation, the variety of activities, from trails to boat and canoe trips to climbing the observation towers. This is a place where every detail has been thought through by owner Vitoria a pioneer in eco-tourism and son Alexandre, a place which has been planned for minimal environmental impact whilst supporting local communities and education projects, a place where guides are treated with respect for their own individual knowledge and professionalism, and a place where each individual visitor is treated as exactly that- an individual with specific interests and wishes in terms of what to do and what to see.
It makes a wonderful change to be saying that the rooms are not basic- indeed far from it! The generator is only on around lunchtime and between 5.30 pm and there is no airconditioning, TV or internet but the rest is definite luxury: spacious well designed rooms, solar heated power showers, excellent ventilation, comfortable beds with quality sheets, a good table with light to work at, a private veranda with hammock and best of all no bugs!
Cristalino lodge is a place which offers packages in the sense that everything is included from transfers to full board, to all activities, but it is not a place where you feel regimented in any sense. Yes, the activities start early (usually between 5.30am and 7am ) but what you do and which guide you are given depends on the interests you state on the application form and I certainly felt like I was treated as an individual (with my own personal guide) whilst having lots of opportunities to mingle with and talk to other guests. Guides decide the night before where they are going to be taking people so no excursion overlaps and the number of people going out with one guide is limited to 8. I tried trails, boat and canoe trips and made it to the top of the observation tower at the end of a long peaceful day. And there was the biggest crimson macaw waiting for me ready to swoop over the backdrop of the forest behind. The trip would have been worth it just for that glimpse of Amazonian magic.

10 important Brazil travel tips

1. Money - Changing money in Brazil is not always that easy. Although you can get Brazilian reais when you land in Brazil finding ATMs which accept foreign credit and debit cards outside major population centres is frequently a challenge and exchange houses (casas de câmbio) are not nearly so common as they used to be, particularly off the beaten track. Best banks to try for ATMs are Bradesco and HSBC and your credit card (particularly VISA) should work in most places- but check with the pousada/hotel in advance if they accept cards, as many smaller ones do not and don't forget to tell your credit card company you are travelling to Brazil so they don't block your card for security reasons!

2. Internal flights and airpasses - If you plan to do some travelling within Brazil and you know where you want to go beforehand, look into the TAM Brazil airpass. Alternatively check out decolar.com, a comparison site where you can find the best deals and cheapest tickets for internal flights.

3. Transfers - Transfers from airports or ports to and from your pousada can usually be organised with the pousada when you make your booking, and this is always recommended on arrival at least whilst you get your bearings. Although taxi drivers in Brazil are predominantly honest, there are still some unscrupulous ones that hang out at airports waiting for tired tourists who don't really know where they are going!

4. Transport and driving - Public transport is usually pretty good in Brazil and comfortable airconditioned buses are frequent between major cities. Curiously there are no trains to speak of in Brazil, so driving is the only other option if you don't want to fly. You can either book onward transport through pousadas with local drivers, or you can get a hire car at the airport and drive yourself. There are lots of options but Localiza offers good prices. If you are doing a coastal trip, this is a really enjoyable way to soak up the landscape.

5. Personal safety when traveling alone - The dangers of safety in Brazil have been well and truly documented (and exaggerated) in the past. As in all places you have to look after your stuff and never leave belongings unattended, particularly on the beach. Also don't go around with your map in hand and large camera round neck wearing your favourite jewels (particularly not at night!). If you are travelling alone a great way to meet people is to stay at a pousada where you are likely to meet other travellers to hang out with. (Incidentally cheaper ones are the best ones for this).

6. Protection from Mosquitoes - Cities in Brazil are generally not bad for mosquitoes and bugs but if you are likely to be going off the beaten track or into forested areas you need to be more prepared. You can get all types of insect repellent locally if you haven't had a chance to prepare beforehand, but make sure you take some with you if you are travelling around outside major population areas and carry some with you when you go out at night.

7. Clothing for hiking - If trekking in Brazil, it is advisable to wear comfortable clothing such as t-shirts, vests and light trousers tucked into socks and sturdy trainers rather than flip flops. That way the bugs really can't get you and your feet are protected through the rainforest. Stick a pair of flip flops in your rucksack along with a bottle of mineral water, book and towel- particularly if you are thinking of making the most of beaches at the other end of your hike, like in Ilha Grande.

8. Booking accommodation for New Year and Carnival - If you want to come to Brazil for the county's biggest celebrations, whatever you do book your flights and accommodation as early as possible! Whether its an apartment in Copacabana for New Year, or a pousada in Salvador for carnival, take advantage of early-bird packages because reasonably priced flights and good accommodation during this time are very difficult to find.

9. Rainy season - There are 5 distinct weather patterns in Brazil and with global "confusion" it is getting increasing difficult to say when each one has its rainy season! In principal the rains come in the Amazon and northern Pantanal between December and April; in the Northeast you should avoid May to July; in the south east (around Rio) most rain falls between December and March; in the Mid West, ditto, and in the South the climate is more mediterranean with warm summers and cool winters and rain more evenly spread..Are you now totally confused? The moral of the story is that Brazil is a very large and diverse country and it is worth checking the weather before you come- particularly if going to beach, Amazon or Pantanal where it matters more..

10. Getting sick- Foreign nationals are actually entitled to unforeseen emergency medical treatment in Brazil's public hospitals. However, it is a different story for existing illnesses, and you might not actually enjoy a public hospital too much (trust me!) so it is always best to get insurance. Brazil is one place it is not worth risking.

Alagoas is one of Brazil's most quaint, yet beautiful states in the north east of Brazil. Sitting between Pernambuco and Sergipe, the area is complete with deserted beaches and unspoilt landscapes, which are actively preserved, and this has made it a desirable destination for eco-travel.

Alagoas' amazing coastline is called the Costa dos Corais (Coral Coast) after the enormous coral reef just offshore and includes a 20km coastal stretch between Barra de Camarugibe in the south and Porto de Pedras in the north known as the Rota Ecológica (Ecological Route) to acknowledge the work,which is being done by local pousadas to support both environmental development and the development of the local communities. Over the last few years, many foreign travelers who initially sought out the Costa dos Corais (coastline) for its off the beaten track location, have settled there and set up pousadas, with a particularly environmentally conscious ethos to attract a different breed of tourist.

One of the initiatives in this area is AREAL - Associação da Rota Ecológica de Alagoas, set up by a collective of pousadas and supported by Sebrae, APL and the state government. The association offer ways for local businesses to support environmental objectives, preserve the land with farming and develop the standard of living for people in the local community. They use their pousadas as venues for concerts and exhibitions that showcase the best of local music and arts talent and encourage support from tourists visiting the area.

The coral coast lies roughly 150kms from Maceió and from Recife. Bicycles are the most popular mode of transport in the villages but most visitors rent a car in either of the entry cities so they have the freedom to explore the surrounding area without having to dependent on very infrequent public transport!

Manaus is the capital of the state of Amazonas , a sprawling metropolis with a population of 1.6 million and a thriving port, aided by the fact that this is a duty free zone. GDP in the state reflects this. It is the 4th highest in Brazil.

The city had a glorious heyday at the height of the rubber boom at the end of the 19^th century, and there are still vestiges of its former glory evident in the Theatro Amazonas, and a few surrounding buildings. However what is worth seeing in the city itself, will not take you more than a couple of hours. What is extraordinary in Manaus is something else entirely: the confluence of Solimoes and Negro, the bustle of hundreds of riverboats, and the extraordinary sense of space and grandeur. Go out to the “meeting of the waters”, where the black Rio Negro meets the brown Solimoes, or take a boat along the banks of one of the rivers to see the flora and fauna, the birds, the butterflies and the dolphins. Now those are unforgettable experiences.

Itacaré is undoubtedly one of the most popular places to visit in Bahia, and up there on the list of Brazil's desirable paradise locations. Situated on the Costa de Cacau or Cocoa Coast of Bahia, (which runs between Ilheus in the south and Camamu to the north) this is where the Rio das Contas river meets the ocean, and where virgin atlantic rainforest acts as backdrop to the beautiful beaches . The town itself has indigenous origins but became known as Itacaré as early as 1732 and countless grandiose mansions atest to the wealth of the town and region during the cocoa boom of the early 20th century.

Rediscovered some 40 years ago by surfers, Itacaré has grown rapidly and there are now countless pousadas, bars, restaurants and a vibrant nightlife. When people think of Bahia in Brazil they normally think either of the wonderful historical city of Salvador or the hundreds of miles of sandy beaches- as deserted or buzzy as you like them. However, Bahia has many other things to offer like Chapada Diamantina, five hours drive west of Salvador, an area of spectacular mountain scenery, some of the highest waterfalls, beautiful caves and smaller colonial towns and villages.

Lençois is the main town in the Chapada Diamantina and the place where most of the eco-tourist agencies are based, but outside high season it is just a sleepy historical town with very little traffic and cafes where you can sit and drink and chat or work without worrying when they might say it's time to leave.

Once the business centre of the Brazilian diamond trade the colonial buildings are testament to a wealth beyond dreams. Many are now in need of a coat of paint but the place is still vibrant and there is a thriving eco tourist trade for people who want to explore the area and enjoy the hikes to mountains, waterfalls and caves. This is an extraordinary and magical place-one that people come back to again and again.

In 2010, Brazil received 5.16 million international travelers, according to the Ministry of Tourism – a 7.8% growth in relation to 2009. Some of those travelers are beginning to explore the attractions which lie beyond the most popular destinations and discovering that pousadas, Brazil's version of B&Bs, inns, lodges and guesthouses can offer a more personalized, up-close experience of the country and its culture than large hotels.

Alison's interest in Brazil dates back to a time when she was living in Paris and met Brazilian musicians through a friend. "I'm addicted to Brazilian music," she says. Before creating Hidden Pousadas Brazil, she worked extensively in marketing for educational publishing companies and EFL schools. It was during a teaching conference in Chile that a stressed-out Alison got a recommendation to take a vacation on Boipeba Island, Bahia. Not long after arriving at her pousada, she felt her stress ebbing away and thought: "This is paradise." And the idea for Hidden Pousadas was born.

Review: Pousada Chez Les Rois, Manaus, Amazonas

Pousada Chez les Rois, was a wonderful find- an oasis of calm in one of the best areas of the city,half an hour from the airport, 4 kms from the centre of Manaus and easy walking distance from shops, restaurants, gyms and even a spa. The 10 bedrooms here are fairly basic but all have en-suite shower rooms, frigobar , TVs and wi-fi internet access which works! Breakfasts are taken by a beautiful pool set in tropical gardens- a wonderful way to start the day and a great place to chill out in the late afternoon and evening when you get back from your day trips out.

Everyone asks about the name, Chez les Rois, which is practically unpronounceable in Portuguese, but curiously it has nothing to do with kings and there is no “French connection” in the pousada at all. But I’ll let them tell you the story. Suffice it to say the beautiful mansion was originally the family home of well known Amazonian guide Miguel Rocha da Silva and the pousada has been run for the last 6 years by his son Mauro who carries on the tradition of imparting hospitality, generosity and local knowledge to pousada guests, with his whole raison d'être the desire to help people live their dreams.I definitely could have stayed a few days longer to explore the faded glory of Manaus, to see just a tiny bit of the massive surrounding rainforest, to buy beautiful wood hand carvings swim with the dolphins and, in the process, realise a few of my own dreams.
